West Road’s DT

Teaching Sequence

At West Road we believe that design and technology is an inspiring and practical subject. It can be found in many of the objects children use each day and is a part of children’s
immediate experiences. We would like to encourage our children to learn to think creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. We want our design and
technology curriculum to encourage our children to use their creativity and imagination in order to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. They should be able to consider their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Design and Technology is, by nature, a creative and imaginative subject which develops an
understanding of knowledge, skills and independent learning. We seek to inspire children to think independently, innovatively and develop creative, procedural and technical understanding. The design and technology curriculum aims to provides children with opportunities to research, represent their ideas, explore and investigate, develop their ideas, make a product and evaluate their work.

During this year the children have really enjoyed accessing our design and technology curriculum, they have had the opportunity to design, make and evaluate a whole range of different products from finger puppets, book covers and even bridges and windmills. The children are always proud when they complete a product and enjoy sharing these with others. We are very lucky to have now purchased a portable cooker allowing the children to cook a range of products in there classrooms. The Year 5 children enjoyed testing this out, adapting and cooking a spaghetti Bolognese recipe, the children all assured me that their recipes were delicious.
