Dear Parent/Carer

Year 5/6 Summer Curriculum Letter

Welcome back to Summer Term!

Please see the ‘Topic Web’ for more detail of what we will be learning this term. Our topic is ‘Hola Mexico!’

In the mornings, we continue with Literacy, reading and maths lessons.

Our afternoon sessions are slightly different – we are now focussing on one or two subject areas each week. We are trialling this to see if it helps us to teach a subject in more depth and with more continuity.

Will continue on Tuesdays.

Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school (indoor and outdoor and appropriate footwear).  If it is easier, encourage your child to bring their PE kit on a Monday and take it home on a Friday.

Y5 swimming is on Thursdays (for those that did not go earlier in the year.)

We appreciate that you are extremely busy, but reading at home with a parent, carer, older sibling or friend, is so important for all our children. It strengthens their confidence, fluency and inference skills and backs up the important work we do at school. So please make time to hear your child read. Please do not forget to sign in their reading diary each time your child reads. We expect the children to read a minimum of 3 times per week at home.

There are a range of online reading resources that may be useful:

Please continue to encourage your child to complete activities online using Spelling Shed.

We expect all our children to join their handwriting and we will be practising regularly in class. If there is any opportunity at home where you could reinforce and practise handwriting that would be a great help.

There are many grammar websites available for the children to practise spelling and grammar at home, here are just a few:

Homework will be handed out weekly. Please encourage your child to complete any homework given. It really does make a difference to your child’s progress within school.

If you need to speak to any of the phase 5/6 team, please email (using the class email addresses) or ring the office to make an appointment.

Yours sincerely
