Stingrays

Spring Term 1 2017

Welcome back to our second term in Year 5/6.As you will be aware, this is a very busy and important time of the year, especially for our Year 6 children.

Topic

Our current topic is ‘Frozen Kingdom’ which is geography based.

We will also be incorporating Art and DT lessons linked to the topic.

ICT

We will be using ICT to develop our topic work and we will be continuing with ‘I-Jam’ the ICT specialists, on a Thursday afternoon.

Maths

We will be following the Year 5/6 curriculum for maths and we will continue to focus on our times tables, calculation strategies, arithmetic skills and developing fluency and reasoning skills. The children will continue to be taught in maths groups. The aim is for all our children to develop mastery in maths.

Literacy

This term we will be looking at newspaper reports, explanation texts, information texts, diaries and narratives -all linked to our Curriculum Theme. We will be sharing examples of different text types.

Spelling/Handwriting

Our focus in spelling will be the Year 5/6 key words and looking at spelling patterns. Each week there will be sessions to improve our handwriting.

Grammar

Every week there will be a grammar lesson with a specific focus. We will also be looking at

Grammar Hammer Activities to develop our understanding.

Home Reading

Children should read at least three times a week at home. All reading needs to be recorded in reading diaries with the date to enable participation in the school’s reader leader competition. This should be signed by a parent/carer. All children should be reading daily to increase stamina and develop fluency.

Homework

This will be set on a Monday and is to be completed by the Friday morning. It will consist of spellings to learn, a maths task, grammar and home reading.

Children will also be able to work on their extended homework. This is to be brought back into school during the week beginning Monday 13th February.

PE

The children will continue to participate in a PE session on a Tuesday afternoon led by Doncaster Rovers

Please ensure your child has the correct kit and school uniform at all times:

  • White T-shirt
  • Blue/black shorts/bottoms
  • Outdoor trainers
  • Jacket for outdoor lessons
  •

Year 5 children will also take part in a swimming session at Thorne Leisure centre.

This is every Monday morning.

Thank you for your continued support
