Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to Year 2! We hope you all had a fantastic Summer and are ready for the new school year.

In Mars and Comet class this half term our topic is called Street Detectives and will have a focus on the local area and history. The children will learn about what home and school life was like a long time ago and how it has changed. They will also be learning about the features of their local area and how it has changed over the years. During this visit the children will be walking around the local area and looking at the different types of homes and businesses in Moorends. There will be no consent form needed as this has been completed when you enrolled your child.

As you are aware the children are visiting Cusworth Hall on the 19th September – please can you complete the consent forms if you haven’t already and return to the office or class teacher.

During the first week the children will complete a reading assessment and this will inform us of the correct colour book they will need to bring home. Sometimes children will go back a band after the school holidays but we are aware of this and will assess them again and change the colour when needed.

We change books every day if needed as long as you write in your child’s reading diary to say that they have read the book at home. In year 2 we continue the reader leader competition – every time your child reads to you or another adult please write and date their reading diary. If they read at least three times a week they will be a reader leader for that week and if that is completed every week for a half term they will receive a prize.

Mars and Comet class PE session is on a Thursday. Please can you make sure your child’s PE is in school on that day.

Next week we will start sending home the weekly spelling homework. For the first term we will be focusing on the Year 2 common exception words. These are a list of 64 words which Year 2 children should be able to read and write by the end of the year. We complete termly assessments of these. The children receive their spellings on a Friday and have the week to learn them.  A quick test is given on the following Friday and the results are shared on the next spellings. These spelling sheets do not need to be returned to school.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thank you for your support,

Miss Richardson and Miss Brumwell

We are continuing our Reader Leader Challenge this year, children need to read at least 3 times a week and they will receive a small prize and a sticker on the chart. Please sign your child’s reading diary to show that your child has read. Well done to all those reader leaders this term.

As well as reading three time a week, children will also receive spellings and a piece of numeracy homework each Friday. Spellings should be practised throughout the week ready for the spelling test on a Friday. Homework needs to be completed and handed in by the following Friday.
