Welcome back to Spring Term in Year 1.

Our topics this term will be Dinosaur Planet followed by Bright Lights Big City.

The dinosaur topic will get off to a great start with our Dinostar day when we will be doing workshops to discover more about these amazing creatures. We will be reading stories with dinosaur characters as well as reading and writing information about them. A lot of our science will link in to the topic too.

The Bright Lights Big City topic will focus on our capital city London. There will be lots of art, geography and history work linked to this. We will read stories that are set in London.

We will be using ICT for our topic work and we will be continuing to use the ICT suite to develop our skills.

We will continue to develop understanding of number and place value and calculations with a range of activities and teaching. We will work on fluency, problem solving and reasoning. Also we will be learning about shape and measures (including money and time.) Look out for maths challenges that are sent home most weeks.

Literacy / Phonics / Spelling / Handwriting

Much of our writing and reading will be based around the topic. We continue to learn new spelling patterns in phonics and will be trying to get even better at blending the words to read and to segment the words for writing. We will continue to send home spellings to learn each week and most weeks there is a little test in class to check if they have been learnt. Learning these spellings will help your child to become a good writer. Please practice as often as possible. In school we are all working hard to improve our handwriting skills. We will be having short handwriting lessons most days.

Home Reading

Children should bring their book bags every day. We will change books when we can, but Friday is our main day for changing books. Children should read at least three times a week at home. Please remember it can be any kind of book e.g. a book from home or the library, a recipe or magazine etc. All reading needs to be recorded in reading diaries (with the date) to enable participation in the schools reader leader competition. This should be signed by a parent/carer. All children should be reading daily to develop fluency. There is a small prize in class each Friday for our Reader Leaders and another chance to win a prize in the Reader Leader assembly.

The children will continue to participate in a PE session on a Wednesday afternoon.

Please ensure your child has the correct kit and school uniform at all times:

  • White T-shirt / polo shirt
  • Blue/black shorts/bottoms
  • Pumps

Milk / Water / Fruit

Please ensure your child always has a water bottle with them. Every day each child gets a piece of fruit to eat. Now your child is five or six they can still have milk but you will need to pay for it. If you are entitled to free school meals you can get the milk for free. You need to register / pay online.

If you have any concerns or worries please speak to a member of staff in Year 1. This can be done at the beginning or end of the day but please wait until all of the children have been let out safely. If you feel you need to make an appointment to discuss anything in more detail please ring the school office and a mutually convenient time will be arranged.

Thank you for your continued support.
