Apollo 11

Welcome back to Year 5/6! As you will be aware, this is a very busy and important time of the year, especially as we begin to prepare our Year 6 children.

Our current topic is Stargazers, which is a science based topic strand with elements of both History and ICT. Our home learning tasks will be sent out in week one of the term, where parents and pupils are asked to work together to complete and create for our classroom displays.

We will be using ICT to develop our topic work and we will be continuing with I-Jam the ICT specialists, on a Wednesday afternoon, with this terms Topic focussing on coding, specifically looking at creating open ended gaming platforms.

We will be following the Year 5/6 curriculum for maths and we will continue to focus on our times tables, calculation strategies, arithmetic skills and developing fluency and reasoning skills. The children will be taught in their classes. The aim is for all our children to develop mastery in maths by becoming solid with their fluency, before looking to develop reasoning and problem solving skills. For more information on the maths strands to be taught in years 5 and 6, please see your class teacher. We will be using a range of interactive resources that you can look at with your children at home, including: Times Tables Rocks; MyMiniMaths.com and MyMaths.

This term we will be basing our writing on our Space topic, looking specifically at writing suspense narratives, myths and legends inspired by the moon and Space poetry. We will also continue to focus on applying our spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout our writing.

Our focus in spelling will be the Year 5/6 key words and looking at spelling patterns. Each week there will also be sessions to improve our handwriting through the writing produced across the curriculum, in our new handwriting books.

Every week there will be grammar lessons incorporated into our daily lessons, as well as being taught discretely with a specific focus.

Home Reading

Children should read at least three times a week at home. All reading needs to be recorded in reading diaries with the date to enable participation in the school’s reader leader competition. This should be signed by a parent/carer. All children should be reading daily to increase stamina and develop fluency.

This will be set on a Monday and is to be completed by the Friday morning. It will consist of spellings to learn, a maths task, grammar and home reading.

Year 6 Boosters

Year 6 pupils will also be expected to continue their superb work in booster sessions, held on a Tuesday and Friday from 3pm-4pm.

The children will continue to participate in a PE session on a Tuesday afternoon led by Doncaster Rovers.

Please ensure your child has the correct kit and school uniform at all times:

  • White T-shirt
  • Blue/black shorts/bottoms
  • Outdoor trainers
  • Jacket for outdoor lessons

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr Rich, Mr Silvester, Mrs Hutchinson and Mrs Woodward.
