Autumn Term 1 2017

Welcome back to our first term in Year 5/6. As you will be aware, this is a very busy and important time of the year, especially as we begin to prepare our Year 6 children.

Our current topic is ‘Alchemy Island’ which is a science based topic strand with elements of both Geography and ICT. Our home learning tasks will be sent out in week two of the term, where parents and pupils are asked to work together to complete a home learning task linked to ‘Alchemy Island’.

We will be using ICT to develop our topic work and we will be continuing with ‘I-Jam’ the ICT specialists, on a Wednesday afternoon, with this terms Topic focussing on ‘Hip-Hop’ music.

We will be following the Year 5/6 curriculum for maths and we will continue to focus on our times tables, calculation strategies, arithmetic skills and developing fluency and reasoning skills. The children will be taught in their classes. The aim is for all our children to develop mastery in maths by becoming solid with their fluency, before looking to develop reasoning and problem solving skills.

This term we will be looking at ‘Clockwork, or All Wound Up’ by Philip Pullman. We will be developing character descriptions, identifying new vocabulary, setting descriptions, travel reports and looking in depth at the structure of narratives – all linked to our Curriculum Theme. We will be sharing examples of different text types throughout guided reading, where our focus is on ‘The Nine Lives of Montezuma’ by Michael Morpurgo.

Our focus in spelling will be the Year 5/6 key words and looking at spelling patterns. Each week there will also be sessions to improve our handwriting through the writing produced across the curriculum, in our new handwriting books.

Every week there will be grammar lessons incorporated into our daily lessons, as well as being taught discretely with a specific focus. We will also be looking at Grammar Hammer Activities to develop our understanding.

Home Reading

Children should read at least three times a week at home. All reading needs to be recorded in reading diaries with the date to enable participation in the school’s reader leader competition. This should be signed by a parent/carer. All children should be reading daily to increase stamina and develop fluency.

This will be set on a Monday and is to be completed by the Friday morning. It will consist of spellings to learn, a maths task, grammar and home reading.

The children will continue to participate in a PE session on a Tuesday afternoon led by Doncaster Rovers.

Please ensure your child has the correct kit and school uniform at all times:

  • White T-shirt
  • Blue/black shorts/bottoms
  • Outdoor trainers
  • Jacket for outdoor lessons

Year 5 children will also take part in a swimming session at Thorne Leisure centre.

This is every Monday afternoon, with Mrs Hutchinson’s class going throughout the Autumn term, with Mr Rich’s class starting their swimming in the Spring Term.

Thank you for your continued support
